Burglary Ring Operating Out Of Palmdale Busted By Detectives

PALMDALE – Sheriff’s detectives working with undercover security officers of a national pharmacy chain “hit the mother lode” Thursday morning when they paid a visit to a house in the 1900 block of Avenue R-12.

The visit to the home broke up a huge burglary ring operating out of Palmdale. Over the course of the past year, the ring had stolen $250,000-$300,000 of high-end merchandise from CVS Pharmacies in the Los Angeles County area.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Cory Kennedy, those involved in the burglaries took cosmetics and products from the stores then resold them at swap meets.

“They got away with this for about a year and a half,” Kennedy said as deputies carried boxes and trash bags filled with expensive items from the house.

Lopez Medardo Hurtado, 28, a male Hispanic, and Mayerly Bustillos, 36, a female Hispanic, were arrested Thursday morning on charges of burglary, conspiracy and grand theft.

When the couple stole about $11,000 of merchandise two nights ago from the Arleta store, detectives decided to pay a visit to the couple’s home.

“We knew it would be a good time because they would not have time to sell the items,” Kennedy said.

The deputies also visited a storage unit belong to the couple where they found more stolen merchandise.

The couple got away with their crimes for so long because they had a car waiting for them at the door and were able to exit the store and escape before employees realized a crime had occurred, Kennedy said.

However, the ring’s downfall began when store security cameras captured their crime and someone was able to get part of a license plate.

CVS security had been working on finding and breaking up the ring for a year, but when the ring began operating in Antelope Valley, security teamed up with Palmdale Sheriff’s Station detectives who spent a month and a half on the case.

“Their biggest mistake was to come to Palmdale,” Kennedy said of the burglary ring.
