Larene Eleanor Austin, 29, was taken into custody Wednesday in Belize and returned to Houston Thursday, where she was turned over to sheriff's detectives. Austin is charged with the murder of Lanell Barsock on June 16, 2010.
According to sheriff’s detectives, Austin claimed that she and Barsock were lifelong friends from elementary school. However, the two had really met through a personal ad on craigslist. The two eventually started a romantic relationship even though both had live-in boyfriends.
However in June 2010, Lanell ended her romantic relationship with Austin, although the two remained friends. Later that same month, the two women met for lunch at Lanell’s home in the 37400 block of Rockie Lane in Palmdale. After lunch, while Lanell sat watching television, Austin pulled out a 9 mm handgun and shot Lanell in the back of her head.
According to investigators, Austin dragged Lanell's body through the house toward the garage but could not lift the body in to the car.
Later that afternoon, Austin went to the LA County Sheriff's Station and told deputies that Lanell’s murderer had been chasing her. However, detectives verified Lanell’s boyfriends alibi, and turned their attention back to Austin, who failed a polygraph test then fled the country.
Sheriff's detectives then asked for help from the Los Angeles Fugitive Task Force. The case was featured on the television series, ``America's Most Wanted.''
After the show aired in December, detectives received a tip that Austin was living in Belize.
