A Look at the Fair Through Young Eyes
By Fran Paolinelli
LANCASTER - Follow our young reporter this year as he visits and reviews the exciting things the Antelope Valley Fair has to offer the youth in our community. Today, we learn about his first visit to the Fair, his first stop at the food booths and attending his first concert of the year.

“The food was good. I had pepperoni pizza,” said our reporter, 10-year-old Brenden Kilmer.

After pizza and a slow walk through the fairgrounds, young Kilmer and his parents found a seat in the grandstands and waited for the Trace Adkins concert to begin. It seems that Kilmer is a country music fan and Adkins has been his favorite performer ever since he saw Adkins on Celebrity Apprentice.

And the handsome young Kilmer also seems to have an early grasp of Adkins’ concept that “Ladies Love Country Boys”. As for Adkins’ performance Sunday night, Kilmer said, “I liked it. I got to see Trace Adkins in person.”

Adkins performed one of Kilmer’s favorites – “You’re Gonna Miss This.”

“It’s about a kid who wanted to grow up fast, but her dad and mom told her not to because she was going to miss being a kid,” Kilmer explained.

Adkins’ performance included a huge screen behind him, which played various videos during his songs.

“Some videos were good, but I would rather have seen him better,” Kilmer added.

The bright videos and lights behind Adkins made it difficult for all but those in the very first rows to see him clearly most of the time. Adkins also performed a song “Just Fishing” from his new CD while a video of him and his very young daughter fishing by the river played behind him. Another song performed had the crowd on its feet, stomping and singing along with Adkins.

Kilmer declared Adkins’ standing room only concert a great success and said he can’t wait to see him in person again. Next time he hopes to meet the performer face to face.

Meanwhile, on his second visit to the Fair, Kilmer is looking forward to taking a look at what’s inside those large, red buildings at the fairgrounds as well underneath all those tents. One visit will be to the rural museum where he can examine up close part of the Valley’s rich agricultural history.

However, being an avid rock collector, Kilmer is already planning a visit to the Van Dam Pavilion and the Gem and Mineral Club. Follow Kilmer while he discovers that there’s a lot for the youth to see at the Fair other than the carnival rides and cute animals.
