Rebels Looking to Defend Their Football Crown in 2011
By Donjai Richardson
The defending Golden League co-champion Quartz Hill High football team is ready to defend and claim the ultimate rights as champions this upcoming season.

Last year the Rebels shared the Golden League championship with Knight. This year they want it all to themselves. Even though the Rebels have lost a great deal of their most talented players, head coach Pat Degnan still believes his team has the same chances of winning another title with the new talent he's acquired.

“This year we've had a lot more players out and with more player that come out, we get a lot of better players,” Degnan said. “Good players make me a good coach. People weren't saying that about Quartz Hill when I got here for the first five years.”

Seniors like Dontel Reeves (Golden League Player of the Year) Zechery Uribe (Golden League Defensive Player of the Year) are no longer with the team. Adding to the departure list are other vital players like quarterback Daniel Pitts, kicker Jose Gonzalez, and defensive lineman Ben Harvey are also no longer on the roster.

Taking over at the quarterback position is Junior Jibraun Asaad. Asaad will be in the back field with returning running back Mario Lodge, who made first-team All-Golden League last season. With a new quarterback, the Rebels will have to rely on Lodge to help generate some offense in the run game and open up the passing lanes for Asaad.

Returning on defense for Quartz Hill is middle linebacker Nathan Bolin, who also made first-team All-Golden League. The defense didn't lose many players and will have to be the backbone this season.

Among other incentives for the Rebels are Cy Zenno, Gerad Gerbell, and Luke Weilbacher.

Degnan has made the Rebels the most consistent team in the Golden League when it comes to winning games. The 2006-07 season was the only losing one they had as they went 3-7 overall and 2-4 in4-league. Since the 2004-2005 season, the Rebels have been a dominant force to be reckoned with. They finished last season 8-3 overall and 6-1 in league, winning all four road games.

The Rebels season came to an end as they lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs to Thousand Oaks 28-21. Quartz Hill had a 7-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but couldn't hold onto the lead as Thousand Oaks scored two touchdowns to win the game and advance to the second round.

The Rebels open up the season September 9 at 7 p.m. as they host Oxnard and will travel to Littlerock on Sep. 30 for their league opener.
